Much of Algeria is covered by the Sahara Desert, an almost waterless area studded by mountains and rocky outcrops. As the last Ice Age terminated some 15,000 years ago, rains fell, rivers flowed, lakes formed, savannah covered the dunes and wild animals followed by people re-populated the land.

A high plateau forms much of central Angola and is surrounded by low-lying, coastal plains, arid in the south, and wide river valleys in the north and east. There are numerous rock outcrops, granite and sandstone, but no mountain ranges.

Three-quarters of Botswana is covered by Kalahari sands. The only real rocky areas lie in the east, although the Tsodilo Hills, a short range of quartzite mountains rising through the dunes in the northwest, contain some 4,000 rock paintings and 2,000 cupules.
