Kakapel Cultural Community Centre Officially Opened

The Kakapel Community Cultural Centre was officially opened on 20 April 2010 by the Prime Minister of the Iteso Kingdom, Sande Emolot and Safaricom Foundation Chairman, Les Baillie. The function was attended by the local Member of Parliament, Hon. Sospeter Ojamong (also Assistant Minister for Labour), Albert Ekirapa, former Member of Parliament, Safaricom Foundation staff and trustees, members of staff of the National Museums of Kenya including Dr Abel Atiti, Acting Director of Museums, Sites and Monuments, the Provincial Director of Culture and the Provincial Administration.

The gathering was entertained by community school and cultural groups all performing in Teso, a Nilo-Saharan language spoken by the Iteso ethnic group in Kenya and Uganda.

The opening ceremony was a colourful event, well-attended by hundreds of community members. Speakers at the function marvelled at the beauty of the region and acknowledged that the centre is well placed for the community to celebrate and showcase their culture and enhance its appreciation among young people.

Throughout the process of building the cultural centre, TARA has enjoyed the collaboration of the stakeholders committee, the community members, the Provincial Administration and other stakeholders. The construction of the centre was generously supported by the Safaricom Foundation.
