The Prince
Claus Fund, in the context of the Cultural Emergency
Response programme (CER), has awarded TARA a grant
towards the protection of the Dabous Rock Art site
in Niger. The grant covers the costs for protecting
the site by custodians for two years. TARA made
the request in view of the ongoing rebellion activities
in the direct surroundings which pose a potential
threat to the heritage. The conflict in the area
has ruined, for the time being, what was a blossoming
tourism industry in the region. Initially the income
from guided visitors is what financed the salaries
of the security guards.
CER provides emergency relief
for cultural heritage that has been either damaged
or destroyed by man-made or natural disasters.
